Palaty
Cultural Center in 17th-Century Palaty, Moscow
Project created in collaboration with architect Varya Shalito
The Palaty of the Hamovny Yard in Moscow, built in the 17th century, are the only surviving structure of the Hamovny Sloboda. This massive brick building features a strict form with white-stone vaults. In 2021, the idea emerged to transform the Palaty into a modern cultural center—a place for people interested in culture and art to connect. The clients aimed to revive the traditions of 19th-century salons, offering opportunities for creative evenings and engaging discussions. Additionally, they envisioned a gallery where artists could showcase their works.
Preserving the original details of the Palaty was crucial for us. We added color to the white-stone walls, giving the gallery and upper lounge areas a deep green hue. Vintage lighting was carefully selected. One of our ideas was to incorporate authentic historical furniture pieces, which we sourced from vintage markets and restored.
The project has come to life and fulfills its purpose—bringing together people interested in art, enhancing their intellectual engagement, and fostering new connections. Within the walls of the Palaty, lectures, meetings, and master classes are held.
